I had the privilege of meeting one of boxing’s true legends this week, Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield visited the UK to launch his biography ‘Becoming Holyfield’ and I made sure I caught up with him. Evander, as you’d expect, was a true gent and although we were hurried along to accommodate the huge throng of supporters queuing behind us, we were able to get a few pics with one of the greatest fighters of all time and he came over as a very humble fella indeed, which is a tonic in these starry times in which we live today.

It’s got to be one hell of a tough job remaining impartial, especially for a boxing writer, when you get to meet the fighters in person and they make a positive impression on you. I came away from Evander’s book signing a bigger fan than I was when I went in and after devouring his book I’ve gone from bemoaning his quest to fight on, to hoping he’s actually successful and wishing him all the best if that’s the way he wants to go out. Holyfield is a champion in and out of the ring, an absolute legend, good luck champ.
