Prospect Watch: Trevor ‘Wrecking’ Crewe

I hail from a region in England where Sonny Liston once paraded down the high street atop a gleaming white horse, where Muhammad Ali recited poetry to an agog Civic Centre and Joe Louis was forced to peddle his sad one man act at the seedy La Dolce Vita nightclub when he was flat broke and down on his luck.

Despite plenty of world champs stopping by, instances of any actually being spawned here have been as thin on the ground as Chinese heavyweights.

The North East of England has long been sold as a passionate sporting region, its incumbents embracing football in particular with an almost religious fervour. I have long lamented the dearth of boxing heroes from the area, especially considering how well Ricky Hatton profited from his links to Manchester City and the club’s fans whom he has affiliated himself with so closely. It’s enough to have me convinced that if a young fighter could come along from these parts and emulate or even surpass the likes of Glen McCrory, Billy Hardy or John Davison, things could really happen for them.

I like the look of local prospect Trevor Crewe (pictured), a 23 year light middleweight from Sunderland, a former junior ABA champ who’s just shot out of the traps with 2 quick wins by knockout. Trained by Karl Ince and fighting out of the Elite Pro Gym in Bolton, Crewe may profit and gain exposure from undercard slots on shows headlined by former Oympian and fellow Sunderland lad Tony Jeffries. His nickname’s not bad either (hey it all helps).

I kind of know Trevor through one of those ‘friend of a friend’ type links and attended a couple of his final fights in the unpaid ranks. I had a hunch at the time that his style was more suited to the pros and I think I’ll be proven right, he looks an exciting prospect, check out the link and see what you think:
