Fury looks to kick on versus McDermott; as easy as he thinks?

Tomorrow evening, Tyson Fury (7-0), a young man who admits to having an eye for his grub, will be looking to sink his teeth into the man he’s repeatedly labelled, ‘McMuffin’. Having revealed an eating prowess which allows him pack on a stone in weight at a single sitting, perhaps Fury’s training and dieting regime has led him to develop a case of the Sylvester and Tweetie Pies. Rather than seeing rival big men blocking his path on the heavyweight horizon, perhaps he can only see giant KFC buckets and Flame Grilled Whoppers coming towards him as he bobs and weaves his way to safety. In fact, if young Tyson picks up any of his namesake’s bad habits once the bell sounds, someone better get one hell of a napkin ready………

I’m waffling, which usually indicates that there isn’t much of a contest to report on and looking at the bookies’ odds that would seem to be about right. The 6 foot 9″ Fury, (ranked 10th in Boxing Monthly’s British heavyweight ratings) is 1/7 with William Hill to win outright and 4/9 to do it by stoppage. His opponent McDermott (25-5 and rated 8th by BM), who incidently, is fighting in his own backyard and on his own promoter’s card to boot, is quoted at 4/1 for the win.

This will be a decent marker for young Fury, McDermott coming into this one off the back of two close points defeats to Danny Williams. If he concentrates on what he’s good at, namely a high work ethic backed up with accurate punching, he should have too much for ‘Big Bad’ John. Fury will be looking to make a statement but might not be able to lower the boom as quickly as he’d like, it should be all over in six or seven rounds however with Fury going on to call out everyone from Colonel Sanders to Wlad Klitschko.

  • If you think Fury is a prohibitive favourite, check out future Super Six opponents Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward who fight warm ups this weekend; the Dane is 1/33, whilst Ward is quoted at 1/100!!
  • I’m going with Ward to win the Showtime tourney but do I take the 10/1 odds on offer now or wait until after the weekend results? If Ward looks awful and Kessler returns with a vengeance, I could be losing some value….hmmmm.
  • If Fury was French, would he refer to McDermott as a ‘Royale with Cheese’?

  1. If Fury’s the real deal he should have McDermott out of there before the start of the second half. McDermott, with all due respect, is fairly useless above domestic level, so if Fury has world title aspirations he shouldn’t really struggle with a man who even Matt Skelton managed to walk through without too much bother.

There’s a lot of pressure on Fury to look good and while that may seem unfair considering he’s only had 7 pro fights and has yet to go past four rounds, one must remember that these are the standards that he has set for himself and he must be judged by those standards.

But I think Fury will back up his talk tonight and stop Big Bad John within five rounds.

  2. McDermott looked determined at the weigh in Dave, he might be able to extend Tyson and show us how much he has in the gas tank. I think Fury will come out like a steam train, at a pace which makes you wince, too hurried, yet it will see him through. Might pose some questions about how he’ll get on in future though.
The Belfast gig was postponed Dave, what a palaver, I’ve had to take a hit on the flights and re-book tickets for the York Hall replacement card, so that I’m still attending everything in October (bar the Prizefighter show). It’s looking not bad, DeGale, Saunders and Chisora are on there and I’m ringside now so every cloud and that!!
Gonna be a hell of a month!!

  3. Yeah major bummer. November 6th is the new date yeah? Did you read the letter from John Breen’s wife in last week’s Boxing News? I wouldn’t like to get on the wrong side of her. :)

  4. Yeah, but I can’t get over for it in November, it had to be that one that got pulled…..never mind.
I saw it yeah, she wasn’t happy was she? I half expected a comeback from Rogie in this week’s mag but maybe he’s saving his ire for Sexton…..probably the easier opponent!!

  5. Well all the talk of Fury shooting up the rankings, ala Mike Tyson, needs to be put on the back burner for the forseeable future. In fairness to him, he showed plenty of grit and a solid chin, but there is LOTS to work on technically and the fact that he never really shook McDermott, despite landing cleanly on several occasions, is worrying. He’s still young, but I can’t honestly see him going beyond European level if he ever manages to get that far.

Also, 98-92? I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised considering the same official had Nicky Cook only winning by a point against Alex Arthur (despite boxing the head off Arthur for most of the 12 rounds) and stopped the Calzaghe vs Manfredo fight when all of Joe’s punches were landing on Manfredo’s gloves.

Mr. O’Connor, please exit stage left……..

  6. I felt compelled to knock a response up Dave, the jungle drums went crazy with talk of fixes, robberies and bent officials (posted above).

I thought it was a very close fight, scrappy and not an easy one to judge in fairness, although O’Connor dropped a major bollock with his card. I’m not a fan of McDermott’s work, he landed harder shots but they were thrown sporadically, Fury’s flicks, pecks and jabs keeping it close on my card.

Fury needs to get real, as others had to before him. Similar to Haye’s growing pains in a way, if slightly lower key, he needs to start again, get fit and start working.

Also, get a flipping hair cut, how often did he flick his head back to remove his hair from his eyes? Let’s face it, it’ll be gone in a few years, shave the bugger off!! He was clipped a couple of times whilst flicking his head back. Could have been the most embarrassing kayo since Nate Campbell if John had clocked him mid flick.

  7. Yes and somebody buy him some kleenex. How many times did he blow his nose during the contest?
