Live Prize Fighter Blog
With treacherous weather outside and a night indoors on the cards, I’m gonna try a spot of live blogging on tonight’s Prize Fighter tournament (live internet feed permitting).
Here’s the deal: I’m gonna start the evening off with £10 on my online betting account (hey big spenderrrrrr) and using the most strategic choices seen since Genghis Khan (no relation to Amir) conquered Eurasia (no relation to 80′s pop band featuring Jimmy Somerville) I’ll be laughing all the way to the Leeds and be quids in by bedtime……….maybe.
Where was I? Oh yes, since last night I’ve actually sought out a bit of footage of the combatants aaaaannnnd I think I’ve been a bit hasty in tipping O Meara, although I’ll stand by it nonetheless (in for a penny and all that). Steve looks fit and fresh however has a bit of a basic style which may not be enough to get him past the hard cracking slugger Concepcion. Drat.
I can see why this Prince Arron fella is third favourite with the bookies mind you, he’s big, mobile and busy, which goes a long way in the short format we’ll be seeing later. Unfortunately I can’t find anything on his opponent, ‘Hit Hard’ Hillyard (beautiful alliteration there) which makes the first punt a tad tricky. I’m gonna have to use the force here to make last minute picks and punts but I’ll make sure I update before the bell rings to keep things above board.
Roll on 20:15…………….
19:30 Oh oh, with just 45 minutes to go I’ve stumbled across Time Bandits on Film 4…….is the whole jamboree in jeopardy already?
20:07 Phew finally found a link……that was close…..
Prince Arron v George Hillyard
20:10 Ok, looking at both boys I fancy Hillyard, however betting has been suspended on him……..don’t like the look of that so I’ll keep my hands in my pockets for now………reluctantly…….
20:13 Arron jabbed himself a round there, although Hillyard landed a sneaky right on the bell. Arron looks creaky……
20:17 Another Arron round, he can’t miss here. This one looks to be over.
20:21 That’s got to be Arron through to the semis, strange the betting on Hillyard being suspended though. Yep 30-27 on all three cards for Arron, big one next.
Bradley Pryce v Neil Sinclair
Hmmmm, Sinky looks old (or is the blurred feed just unflattering?) can he roll back the years here? I’m going £3 on Pryce -returns £5 whooooo (if I told you I meant to pick Sinclair but had hit the wrong button would you think less of me? Goddam multi tasking…..). Fingers crossed.
20:35 Tough round, both guys look pretty awful, think the Welshman just nicked it, not sure either can win this though……
20:39 Wow, close fight, Sinclair’s cut now however…….think Pryce is shading it…..can I win by default?
20:43 That’s got to be a Pryce-Arron semi……….Pryce looks a shot fighter to me though. Oh well £2 up but my preview is out of the window. Swings and roundabouts.
Butler v Flournoy
Ok I’m feeling brave so I’m going for the underdog here, £3 Flournoy at 13/8, returns £7.88. Come on the scouser!!
20:59 That’s more like it, Flournoy looks a potential winner here, although the judges may like Butler’s crude aggression. Flournoy has some skills doesn’t he?
21:03 Flournoy must have this one in the bag, if you can still get a bet on him to win, get on him. The bookies have Butler winning this…..crazy…….
21:08 Smith & Watt have Flournoy winning, as do I.
So do the judges thankfully, this guy could win it, he’s slick. That’s me up to £16.88 as well-hallelujah days.
O Meara v Concepcion
I have to stick with O Meara don’t I? His rather stiff, head in the air style may see him clumped here but I’ll keep the faith…..gulp…..£3.88 on him, returns £6.70.
21:21 Drat, Hills have taken away the betting before I can seal my bet, and all Prize Fighter betting has disappeared. I’m having to utilise another account, I’ll be back for the semis. Looks like O Meara nicked the first. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
21:26 My man looks good and is winning this one. Damn you William Hill!! Already looking forward to Flournoy-O Meara.
21:30 O Meara all the way there. I like Arron and Flournoy to progress though and I think they’ll be underdogs. Bring on the semi finals!!
Ok I like Arron and Flournoy (both underdogs) for finalists. I’m going £3 on both at 7/4 and 6/4 respectively. Nice little returns there, leaves me £10.88 for the final.
I couldn’t resist a sly £4 on Flournoy at 4/1 to win outright. That’s me down to £6.88 right now with three bets riding.
Pryce v Arron The ‘Manchester Beanpole’ as Adam Smith tags him jabs Pryce silly. Looking good here for another win. Wow.
21:49 That’s a Pryce round I reckon, all huff and bluster. If Arron can regain his poise he can nick this one. Bradley looks awful, the winner must be in the other semi, surely?
21:55 Arron was giving it the showboat in the last, looks like he’s made it to the final and given me another boost to my kitty. Yep he has, but who will he face? Oh yeah, I’m now up to £15.13 (going far too well all this).
O Meara v Flournoy This one should be a cracker. I can’t believe how much I’m enjoying this thing, thank you Barry Hearn (that’s the first time I’ve ever said that). O Meara looks sound technically and will be busier but Flournoy looked very, very stylish in his first bout (for this level at least). I need him to win this and the next for a textbook evening.
Looks like a close first round to O Meara. Oooh, but the second must go to Flournoy, all on the last………looks like the scouser to me….although I would say that wouldn’t I?
Wow I can’t miss tonight but I’m at a loss for the final, I’m leaning towards Arron but unfortunately my money’s already on Flournoy!!
22:23 I’m now up to £22.63 with my £4 already on Flournoy. This has all gone far too well.
Flournoy v Arron The underdog enters wearing a ‘Birkenhead Roofing Supplies’ t-shirt, you gotta love this stuff. That first round was close, it’s a fencing contest. I’d give it to Flournoy……………just.
Flournoy landed some decent shots there and Arron seems to have lost his way somewhat. All on the last round. Exciting.
Bingo, first knockdown of the night……………and it’s Arron who’s scored it. That’s gotta seal it for the young lad. Despite costing me £20, I’m happy for him, great effort.
22.47 The knockdown was indeed crucial, Arron is the winner and now £32k better off, winning by one point on all cards. Well I end up on £22.63 which has more than doubled my money and it’s been such fun I think we’ll have to do it all again.
Roll on Prize Fighter 11.

My money’s on O’Meara!!
Ah nuts! Shows what I know. I guess thats why I don’ have my own boxing website!!
Ha, unlucky mate, even worse luck, I just lost my link!!
Nightmare! My link keeps getting interrupted by Travis the long haired goon and his crappy bus.
Wow – all down to the last round, great stuff!
Well i’m off to reclaim the tv – cracking blog mate! Take it easy.
Cheers buddy, the knockdown cost me!! Never mind, was a smashing way to waste an evening!! Laters dude.
