Manny Pacquiao kept Joshua Clottey in check and in his shell for the most part as he romped to a decision win before some 50, 000 fans in the sparkling Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Clottey, known for covering up against opponents but used to firing back once they’d emptied a clip on his brawny, double armed defence, wasn’t given a chance to do so as Pacquiao buzzed away at him all night long.

Pacquiao, looking thick set and chunky, used his fantastic speed, heavy hands and foot movement to dominate Clottey, who answered back rarely for fear of being dismantled. Post fight the Ghanaian explained that it was Manny’s speed rather than his power which did for him, claiming that this was the first legitimate loss of his career.

One thing this fight did show was that Pacquiao is no welterweight, merely a great smaller fighter who can deal with them. Indeed it was the Filipino terror who was marked up at the fight’s conclusion (Clottey as ever was without a blemish) and looked hugely tired at his evening’s work, thumping around a far naturally larger man.

When Clottey did attack (albeit sporadically) his punches visibly carried more weight than Pacquiao’s, which only added to the sense of confusion surrounding Clottey’s negative display. One wonders how Pacquiao would fare if a bonafide welterweight as aggressive as say, Shane Mosley, was throwing pineapples in his direction and was more amenable to attacking rather than defending.

Nonetheless, Pacquiao’s legend stretches further with this latest giant killing endeavour and he moves to 51-3-2 (38) whilst Clottey falls to 35-4 (20). The great man will now pursue election to congress in his homeland in a bid to help the people he feeds off and who he seeks to please each and every time he steps between those sixteen strands. The world meanwhile will hope to see him back against either Shane Mosley or Floyd Mayweather later this year in what would be boxing’s biggest night in many a long year.

.Judges Levi Martin, Nelson Vasquez and Duane Ford scored the bout 119-109, 119-109 and 120-108 for Pacquiao respectively.
