Britain’s Best Update
It’s a new week and I’m getting the broom out. I’ve decided to have a spring clean of my British pound for pound top twenty (there it is in that little grey sidebar) in light of recent happenings on the domestic scene.
I was putting this off until Ricky Hatton’s future had been clarified. Rumours are rife that the popular Mancunian had re-entered training, only to down tools pretty sharpish. Swapping his sweats for a dodgy shirt, he apparently jetted off to attend a stag party in the sun after deciding he could no longer acquiesce to the rigorous demands of being a fighter.
As it stands, he stays put until an official announcement is made however, his place is under serious threat from young guns Amir Khan and Kevin Mitchell, both of whom face world class opposition next up.
Firstly, Nicky Cook departs the rankings due to inactivity after not having fought since being walloped by Roman Martinez on the Khan-Barrera undercard last year (Cook crucially doesn’t have a comeback fight scheduled despite his resumption of training).
This leaves a spot up for grabs and there were five names in the frame; Ricky Burns, Jamie McDonnell, Tony Quigley, Gary Sykes and Martin Lindsay. Due to his recent form and the fact he now reigns as European bantamweight champion, I’ve given McDonnell the nod.
I’ve also resisted moving Kell Brook up the rankings despite his one sided drubbing of Krzysztof Bienias although he looks a cert for a top ten spot in the very near future.
As ever, your contributions would be most welcome, I’m always amenable to ringing the changes if you have a good enough argument.
