Well folks, sheer boredom has forced me to return to a spot of live blogging on tonight’s Prize Fighter tournament (live internet feed permitting).

I usually start the night with a few bob on my online betting account and plot my way into profit (a total of £44.03 from the last two tournaments is pretty good going), however, I may well leave the first round alone altogether tonight.

Here are tonight’s runners and riders in this super bantamweight edition:

Quarter Finals

Mark Moran v Willie Casey

Esham Pickering v Josh Wale

Robbie Turley v Jamie Arthur

Gavin Reid v Ricky Owen

The odds outright are:

Owen 11/4, Arthur 7/2, Moran 5/1, Casey 5/1, Wale 6/1, Pickering 7/1, Reid 20/1, Turley 20/1

I’ll lay my cards down from the off, I’ve lumped my £20 stake on Moran to win the thing at 5/1. I see the tidy southpaw having a great chance, despite recent injury woes. If I come unstuck (which I usually do) I’ll call the cavalry and top up my account for the semis to try and recoup my stake.

Ok then, roll on 9pm.

Danny Flexen has tipped Wale to stop Owen in the final. At 6/1, that’s nice odds.

21:13 Great opener between Moran and Casey, the underdog’s round this as well; all out aggression.

21:17 Errr, yep. Moran’s cut and knackered. What a day I’ve had today. Looks like Casey has this one in the bag and that I’ll be topping up my chips pretty sharpish. Humph…….

21:19 Yippedy doo dah, that’s how you blow £20 in a few minutes, Casey drops then stops Moran. My mind is saying abort, my pride is saying hang in. Great win for Casey and a cracking little dust up, already more action than the entire cruiserweight shambles last time we did this thing.

21:30 Well I’m back, but I’m waiting for the semi finals to punt again though. Pickering (who may be shot) v Wale (Flexen’s pick and favourite here).

21:34 Oh dear, Pickering is being battered. He survives the first round but his corner should pull him out. Terrible to see.

21:37 “The Outlaw” as Wale calls himself is teeing off on Pickering at times here. Gutsy though from Esham. Casey v Wale is gonna be fantasic but surely the winner is in the other half of the draw? These guys will be spent…….

21:44 Great battle, got to be Wale’s victory, however, he’s badly cut so it could be curtains for both of these guys. The reserves may be called upon, is that good or bad news for Casey? Yep, Wale takes a split decision, but can he go on?

21:46 Turley v Arthur next, should be a straightforward win for the former Commonwealth Games champ Arthur, oh and Wale’s lacerated eyelid isn’t as bad as it first appeared.

21:51 Confirmed, Wale boxes Casey in the semis. That will be cracking.

21:58 Change of pace here. Arthur looks smooth, Turley as raw as you like. This has points win for Arthur written all over this one.

22:02 Drab fight this one, quite a change from the first two humdingers. Hmmm, can’t see a winner here.

22:08 Turley gets away with a blatant headbutt there in what has been a mess of a fight. Arthur on a split. Reid v Owen next.

22:16 Here we go with Reid v Owen. Reid is a huge underdog in this one, Owen is 1/5.

21:20 Drat, I’ve lost connection……….

22:35 Great, missed an entire bout, although I hear it was a cracker…….ahem…..Ok, here’s the comeback: My feed is pathetic so I’m going £20 on  Wale to beat Casey at 11/4, cut be damned. At the very least it’ll put me out of my misery and I can scuttle off to bed………

22:47 Great opener, tough to score but I’d go for Casey there.

22:50 Ooooh one round apiece but Wale unravelling. All on the last?

22:54 This one’s on a knife edge. Watt has Wale.

22:56 It’s Casey on a split, Nelson had Wale also. That’s annoying and I wind up minus £40 for the night, wiping out my previous efforts. Bugger it to blazes (gambling and boredom, a surefire route to destitution).

22:58 Something tells me the next won’t feature as much action. Owen v Arthur and it’s a pick ‘em.

23:05 Wow just seen the highlights of Owen’s fight with Reid, pity I lost that one to my failed connection. In fact, pity my failed connection didn’t kick in when I placed those two risky bets. Owen should be more lively here but he may be exhausted from his first bout. Either way, Casey will start favourite in the final.

23:08 This one’s bad tempered and a bit dirty. Arthur has been warned for hitting behind the head a few times, could be hanging by a thread. I’d give the round to Owen, although the cut’s open again.

23:12 Owen’s getting home with the better shots, both men bleeding now. The reserves must be getting twitchy backstage, imagine coming off the bench to face Casey! Good shot from Owen, he’s winning this one.

23:16 Final round and Owen is hurt badly, it seemed as though Arthur dropped him, however, the ref rules it a slip/push. Contentious that call. Looks like Owen will survive and edge into the final.

23:19 This has to be the best Prize Fighter to date you’d imagine, another decent tussle. Owen takes it unanimously, final next.

23:22 ”The Omen” v “The Big Bang”, what’s not to like about a fight involving two guys with such high quality monikers?  I’d be surprised if Owen makes it through to the final bell against Casey. If I had any bucks left, I’d bet on a stoppage for the man from Limerick (one of 22 kids apparently, no wonder he can fight).

23:24 Mama mia!! Owen is out of the final!!

23:29 It’s now reserve Paul McElhinney against Casey, but the Irishman starts a huge 1/6 favourite.

23:37 Fairytale stuff for the young Scot, McElhinney. Casey looks like he could be a player domestically at super bantam, tough, willing and action packed.

23:42 That looked like a round for McElhinney to me, Casey looked cream crackered. Not sure it will be a popular win if the young lad takes it mind you.

23:45 That’s a Casey round, McElhinney has a bloodied snout now. All on the final round here, exciting to the last.

23:49 It’s Casey’s night and what an effort from the wildcard, who only stepped in after Wayne McCullough dropped out. He’s now £32,000 richer and has a bit of a future you’d feel. Great stuff.

23:50 It’s unanimous for the tough little battler Casey. I enjoyed that (apart from the gambling part)….. “The Big Bang” rained on my parade, but fair play to him, he was excellent.

Til next time then. Adios amigos.

  1. Gutted for Owen, but his eye was awful.

Prizefighter has produced two promising domestic fighters in Jon-Lewis Dickinson and Willie Casey in the last two contests. It’s a competition format that’s grown on everyone, I think.

How do you think Wayne McCullough would have fared?

  2. He looked sick as a dog at having to withdraw there Owen. I’m very impressed with Casey, he has a look of Michael Gomez about him and looks sure to be involved in his share of thrillers down the line.

It’s very difficult to say with regard to McCullough, I really don’t know what he has left in the tank. He’d have had a tough time with Moran and Wale in that half of the draw I fancy, I’m kinda glad we didn’t get to find out.

I was always a big fan of “The Pocket Rocket” and it would have been a major downer to see him struggle at this level.
